BRIDGEWATER – Hunterdon Central is New Jersey’s No. 1 high school boys golf team, even if there no longer is an official plaque to celebrate it.
The Red Devils were best among 24 teams competing at Monday’s State Boys Golf Championship, but the NJSIAA’s decision to discontinue team Tournament of Champions this school year denied them an official award.
Thus, Hunterdon Central had to settle for winning one of the six group titles, Group 4, with a four-player score of 310 that was one shot better than the 311 carded by Newark Academy, last year’s TOC titlist and this year’s Non-Public A champion.
“It’s something that we worked hard for, for the entire year,” said Chris Gacos, Hunterdon Central’s veteran coach. “Fortunately, we had four members back who played last year when we won the [Group 4] championship.”
Meanwhile, the NJSIAA continued to honor the best player. Delbarton senior Tyler Lee won after shooting 2-under-par 70 and topping Newark Academy sophomore Arjun Caprihan in a one-hole playoff. Lee and Caprihan were the only two players to break par.
Here's a breakdown by group:
